Traditionally made from glass, mirrors can now be constructed using acrylic or polycarbonate materials. Made from a continually processed acrylic or polycarbonate sheet, mirrors are created using a process of vacuum metalizing, in which the sheet is given a mirror finish backed by a durable protective coating.

Available in 1/8” or 1/4” thickness, acrylic and polycarbonate mirrors are gaining popularity in many applications due to their ease of fabrication and increased safety over glass. Glass mirrors are often too heavy and present a severe risk for breakage and possible injury in certain locations. The shatter resistant properties of acrylic and polycarbonate make these materials obvious choices for bath mirrors, home gyms, dressing areas, and even children's play areas. Acrylic mirror has 17 times greater impact resistance than glass mirror of equal thickness and comprises half the weight.
