Why Use Aqua-Steel® for Marine Backer Plates?

Aqua-Steel from Piedmont Plastics fabricated into backer plates

Backer plates play a critical role in boat construction. They reinforce mounting points, distribute loads, and secure hardware such as cleats, T-tops, ladders, swim platforms, and rod holders. When these components are exposed to water, vibration, torque, and heavy stress, the material behind them must provide dependable holding power.

Piedmont Marine Grade® (PMG®) Aqua-Steel® was formulated specifically for safety and mission-critical backer plate applications where maximum strength and long-term reliability are required. As a high-performance composite alternative to aluminum and steel, Aqua-Steel® delivers exceptional pull strength, machinability, dimensional stability, and durability, especially in wet, below-the-waterline environments. In applications where passenger safety and structural integrity are non-negotiable, material reliability is essential.

An Expert is just around the corner.

With over 100 years of combined product knowledge and industry experience, we are confident our plastics experts can help you find a solution for your application.

Built for Real-World Marine Conditions

Marine hardware mounting areas are constantly exposed to moisture, flexing hull structures, vibration, and repeated loading. A backer plate must maintain its shape and integrity despite these ongoing forces.

Aqua-Steel® is engineered with a hydrophobic resin system that resists moisture intrusion and helps prevent swelling or delamination over time. This dimensional stability is critical in fiberglass boats, where structural movement under load is expected. By remaining stable within the laminate, Aqua-Steel® supports consistent load distribution across fastening points, helping reduce hardware loosening and long-term structural fatigue.

Aqua-Steel® is designed to perform consistently throughout the life of the vessel, helping manufacturers build with long-term confidence. For marine manufacturers focused on durability, weight management, and extended service life, Aqua-Steel® provides dependable reinforcement built for demanding boating environments.

Engineered for Maximum Holding Power

Backer plates are the structural foundation behind critical fastening points. When a cleat is tied off under heavy load or a T-top experiences constant vibration, the backer plate must absorb force, distribute stress, and maintain thread integrity.

Aqua-Steel® delivers pull strength approaching 1,800* PSI, providing the holding power required in high-stress marine applications.

Common fastening point applications include:

  • Cleats and tie-down points

  • Bow rails and bow eyes

  • T-tops and hard tops

  • Swim platforms

  • Trolling motors

  • Engine blocks

  • Seat mounts

  • Blind fastener applications

In each case, Aqua-Steel® provides consistent reinforcement that keeps hardware secure under repeated torque, wave impact, and daily use.

Machinability And Fastener Benefits

Aqua-Steel® can be precisely drilled and tapped, allowing stainless steel fasteners to thread directly into the material and create secure anchoring points without relying solely on through-bolting.

Unlike aluminum, Aqua-Steel® does not fall victim to galvanic corrosion when paired with stainless steel fasteners. This helps reduce the risk of corrosion, seizing, and difficult servicing over time.

Seamless Integration During Lamination

Aqua-Steel® can be installed during the fiberglass lamination phase, allowing it to chemically bond with the resin inside the mold.

This integration provides:

  • No surface preparation requirements

  • Strong structural bonding

  • Reduced long-term movement

  • Improved load transfer

Metal backer plates cannot chemically bond in this way. They rely strictly on mechanical fastening, which may allow shifting or loosening over time.

By becoming part of the laminate itself, Aqua-Steel® enhances structural stability while simplifying the build process. Because Aqua-Steel® requires no surface prep and can be laminated directly into the mold, it helps streamline production workflows and reduce secondary processing steps.

Aqua-Steel® vs. Aluminum: A Clear Performance Advantage

For builders evaluating alternatives, the differences between Aqua-Steel® and aluminum are significant.

Feature Aqua-Steel® Aluminum
Weight Approximately half the weight of aluminum Heavier
Installation Bonds during lamination Cannot chemically bond
Corrosion Risk No galvanic corrosion with stainless fasteners Potential galvanic corrosion
Machinability Drill and tap capable, including blind fasteners Drill and tap capable
Cost More cost-effective Higher material cost
Moisture Performance Resists swelling and delamination Corrosion is possible in marine use

Reducing reinforcement weight helps improve overall vessel balance and performance, particularly in high-volume production builds. For many builders, the combination of weight reduction, installation efficiency, corrosion resistance, and material savings can have a meaningful impact on overall build performance.

Designed for Below-the-Waterline Applications

Materials used below the waterline must maintain structural integrity despite continuous exposure to moisture. Aqua-Steel® was engineered for these demanding conditions.

Its moisture-resistant resin system helps preserve dimensional stability while maintaining strength in submerged or high-humidity environments. For boat builders, this translates to:

  • Greater structural reliability

  • Reduced warranty risk

  • Long-term peace of mind

This reliability supports safer builds and improved long-term durability.
